Chapter 19: We Keep Love in a Safer Place

Doors with pressure locks don’t slam very well, but goodness knows I tried.

When I’d left the garden, Kiki had tried to stop me, but Miah put a hand on her arm and told her to let me go. I paced up and down the hallway with my fists clenched. Emotions clamored inside my head. The noise was deafening.

They’d given me some answers. I knew why my father had been taken from me. I knew why he hadn’t come back. I knew how he died and who was responsible. Perhaps not the person who cut the mechanical heart from his chest, but the people who had allowed it to happen.

I couldn’t hide here and wait for them to go after Joe.

A clattering from the main room reminded me that I hadn’t spoken with Ben since last night. I hesitated, unsure if I was ready to see him. How could I ever look at him the same way again?

When I heard a second clatter, I made my decision. I’d have to tear the bandage off sooner or later. Might as well be sooner.

When I left the hallway, I let out an exasperated sigh. It wasn’t Ben at all.

Mirabelle picked at the cold sausage and apple concoction left on our plates. When she heard me approach, she jumped, her fingers at her mouth like a small child caught stealing sweets. She relaxed when she saw who it was.

“Don’t your freaky friends have something a little finer to present a lady? Or are you the only ‘lady’ they ever entertain?” Her signature sneer was in attendance, but the venom in her voice seemed less potent than usual.

“Big talk from someone dressed like a chorus girl from Carmen and stealing food from used plates,” I snapped.

Her cheeks colored as she gripped the brilliant red skirts of the costume dress she wore. She tossed her hair. “This is all a very silly joke. Petty of you, really.”

I rolled my eyes. “What are you on about?”

“Come now, you don’t believe I actually thought that brute you hired to scare me was real? Your band of cads can forget about demanding a reward for my safe return.”

I gaped at her. “You think I’d hire someone to hold us both at knifepoint to get back at you for being a terrible brat?”

“This is an actual kidnapping, then?” Her irritating smile faltered a little. “In that case, they’d better ask for a hefty ransom. They’ll need it to outrun the people my father will set on their trail.”

“I can’t imagine your father paying more than a nickel to get you back.”

Shock and hurt crossed over her face before her skin went blotchy red. “At least I still have a father.”

The line that had been stretching taut inside me snapped. I rushed forward and pushed her so hard she hit the table and a plate smashed on the floor. She loosed a pained cry from behind her clenched teeth, but didn’t back down.

“What is the matter with you, you wretched girl?” I yelled into her face.
